Get ready for Jupiter’s closest encounter with Earth – The Opposition

Jupiter-720x340

Jupiter will be closest to Earth today at just 650 million km away from our planet [4.346 AU (astronomical unit)] – a phenomenon which is called the ‘opposition’ as Earth passes between the sun and Jupiter and if you are in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam or Kolkata among other cities you will get a chance to have a look at the largest planet in our solar system.

One of the primary reasons why this phenomenon is one of the most awaited ones every few years is because of the fact that stargazers can get a glimpse of Jupiter with the naked eye. In India, you can easily locate Jupiter by looking in the eastern direction in the evening.

If you are interested in watching it, scientists advise the best time to view Jupiter would be 30 minutes after sunset towards the east. You will see the planet rising slowly and by midnight Jupiter will be high over head. If you are an early riser, you will be able to catch a glimpse of Jupiter shining bright about one hour before sunrise towards the west.

Telescope and powerful binoculars are stargazers’ best friends and if you have either one or both of them, you could get a better sight of the planet along with four of its moons. Further, scientists also urge to look for a place on the ground above which there is no patch of clouds for the best viewing. If you manage to drive to the outskirts of the city where there is less light and air pollution, you will manage to get a far better view than when in the city.

Phenomenon is dubbed as Jupiter’s ‘opposition’ to the sun as during this time the Earth passes between the sun and Jupiter.

f you happen to be in Kolkata today, you may very well schedule a visit to the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum as they have made a special arrangement for viewing this astronomical event through two of their telescopes – a Celestron Telescope of ten inches and a Carl Zeiss one of four inches from 6 pm till 8 pm.
