The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) that has won Indira Gandhi Peace Prize for 2014 is making history worldwide with its entry into the Time magazine’s top 25 inventions of the year and that making it to the second slot after the Hendo Hoverboard.

The citation from Time’s magazine says: “Nobody gets Mars right on the first try. The U.S. didn’t, Russia didn’t, the Europeans didn’t. But on Sept. 24, India did. That’s when the Mangalyaan (Mars craft in Hindi) went into orbit around the Red Planet, a technological feat no other Asian nation has yet achieved.”

The project undertaken with just $74 million, less than the budget spent for the Hollywood film “Gravity”, carrying just five onboard instruments that allow it to do simple calculations like measure Martian methane and surface composition.

Further, the Time magazine said, “it allows India to flex its interplanetary muscles, which portends great things for the country’s space program—and for science in general.”

Riding high on its success, ISRO is now aiming at the next mission in 2018 with lander and a rover to explore Mars in depth.

The Mangalyaan or MoM entered Mars orbit successfully on September 24, with 5 scientific instruments to search for life-sustaining elements such as methane gas and related vaporous elements on the Red planet.

The MoM mission was originally launched on November 5, 2013 from the Sriharikota and it took 9 months to travel and reach the outer atmosphere of the Red planet. ISRO is currently focusing on developing a heavier rocket with greater payload to launch a lander and a rover to Mars.

Time’s Top 10 Best Inventions in 2014 chose Hendo Hoverboard, a skateboard that levitates like a magic carpet, a dream since its fictional debut in 1989’s Back to the Future Part II, that has been built by California-based tech firm Hendo priced $10,000.

While India’s Mars Orbiter Mission was in its second position, the high-beta fusion reactor developed by Lockheed Martin. came third.

The Wireless Electricity or Witricity, that is in development for Toyota cars, Intel PCs and more is in fourth position, followed by the 3-D-Printing in the fifth position.

Not far from the top was Apple iWatch in 6th position and the Blackphone or the smartphone that puts privacy first, runs on a customized Android operating system takes the 7th position.

The coolest cooler that powers a party that stores food and drinks is now the most funded creation on Kickstarter is in 8th position and Lumo Lift, the chip that stops you slouching comes next.

The Car that Makes Electric Enticing, BMW i3 electric car that can run 70 to 110 miles (113 to 177 km) on a single three-hour charge is in the tenth position.
